About Gyrotonic

Gyrotonic (and its mat-based counterpart Gyrokinesis) is a movement methodology using continuous spiralling and wave-like motion patterns to develop spinal mobility, joint freedom, and functional strength.

Gyrotonic was created by Juliu Horvath (born 1942), a Romanian-born professional ballet dancer who defected to the United States via Italy in the 1970s. After career-ending injuries, Horvath turned to yoga, swimming, dance, and gymnastics to rehabilitate, eventually synthesising these influences into a movement system he initially called ''Yoga for Dancers'' and later ''White Cloud.'' In the 1980s, he designed the proprietary equipment (the Gyrotonic Expansion System) to provide the specific resistance qualities his movement patterns required. The name ''Gyrotonic'' combines ''gyro'' (circle/spiral) and ''tonic'' (to tone/strengthen). The system gained a following among professional dancers, then expanded into rehabilitation, athletics, and general fitness. Horvath established the Gyrotonic Sales Corp and a structured trainer certification programme. By the 2020s, Gyrotonic studios operated in over 70 countries with thousands of certified trainers.
