Coordination difficulties arise when the nervous system's ability to plan, time, and execute movements is impaired. The cerebellum is the primary brain structure responsible for motor coordination, and cerebellar conditions — including multiple sclerosis lesions, tumours, alcoholic cerebellar degeneration, and hereditary ataxias — produce characteristic coordination difficulties. Developmental coordination disorder (DCD/dyspraxia) is a common neurodevelopmental condition affecting 5-6% of children, in which motor planning difficulties persist into adulthood. Peripheral nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy) impairs the sensory feedback that guides coordinated movement. Medications including certain anticonvulsants and sedatives can produce coordination difficulties as side effects.
