Elbow stiffness describes reduced range of motion in the elbow joint — particularly limited extension (inability to fully straighten the arm) or flexion (inability to fully bend it). It occurs following acute injury (where protective muscle guarding and haematoma organisation produce stiffness during healing), chronic osteoarthritis of the elbow (where osteophyte formation and capsular thickening mechanically limit movement), after fractures or dislocations (where post-traumatic stiffness is common and requires active rehabilitation), and in systemic inflammatory arthritis. The elbow is one of the most vulnerable joints for post-traumatic stiffness — even brief periods of immobilisation can produce significant contracture. Early, progressive mobilisation with physiotherapy guidance significantly reduces long-term stiffness after elbow injuries.
