A fracture is a structural break in the continuity of a bone. Fractures are classified by mechanism (traumatic, stress/fatigue, or pathological), displacement (undisplaced, displaced, comminuted), location (shaft, epiphysis, articular surface), and pattern (transverse, oblique, spiral, greenstick in children). Traumatic fractures result from acute force exceeding bone strength. Stress fractures arise from cumulative repetitive loading — common in runners, military recruits, and dancers. Pathological fractures occur in structurally compromised bone — most commonly from osteoporosis (vertebral compression fractures, hip fractures) or metastatic cancer. Hip fractures in older adults carry significant mortality and morbidity. Clinical presentation varies from minor localised pain and swelling to severe deformity, neurovascular compromise, and haemodynamic instability in major fractures.
