Hair thinning describes a gradual reduction in hair shaft diameter or density — individual hairs becoming finer, fewer new hairs replacing shed ones, or both — producing a visible reduction in hair volume over time. It is the early presentation of androgenetic alopecia (hormone-sensitive pattern hair loss), but also occurs with thyroid dysfunction (both hypo- and hyperthyroidism), iron deficiency (even with normal haemoglobin — ferritin below 70 µg/L commonly causes hair thinning), vitamin D deficiency, zinc deficiency, chronic stress and elevated cortisol (which shifts follicles into the resting phase), and as a delayed response (two to four months) to major physiological stressors such as surgery, childbirth, severe illness, or crash dieting. Treating the underlying contributor halts and often reverses hair thinning when it is identified early.
