Hypervigilance is a state of sustained elevated threat detection in which the nervous system remains on high alert — scanning for danger, over-interpreting ambiguous signals as threatening, and failing to achieve the parasympathetic rest needed for recovery. It is a hallmark feature of PTSD (where the nervous system learned that the world is genuinely dangerous), chronic anxiety disorders, complex trauma (C-PTSD), domestic abuse experiences, and certain autoimmune conditions where the immune system mirrors the same pattern of generalised activation. It is physiologically costly — maintaining hypervigilance exhausts the sympathetic nervous system, disrupts sleep, amplifies pain, impairs immune function, and makes genuine relaxation impossible. Many people with hypervigilance have experienced it so consistently for so long that they have forgotten what a truly relaxed nervous system feels like.
