Malabsorption describes the failure of the small intestine to adequately absorb one or more nutrients — fats, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, or minerals — despite their presence in the diet. Causes include coeliac disease (gluten-triggered immune damage to small intestinal villi), Crohn's disease of the small bowel, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (insufficient digestive enzymes), bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine (SIBO), lactase deficiency, and post-surgical changes reducing absorptive surface area. Specific deficiencies drive specific symptoms: B12 and folate deficiency produces anaemia and neurological symptoms; fat-soluble vitamin deficiency produces bone disease, bleeding tendency, and immune dysfunction; iron deficiency produces anaemia.
