Tinnitus is the conscious experience of sound — typically ringing, buzzing, hissing, whistling, or clicking — without a corresponding external stimulus. It is classified as subjective (heard only by the patient) or, rarely, objective (audible to the examiner, usually from vascular or muscular causes). Most tinnitus is sensorineural, associated with cochlear hair cell damage from noise exposure, ageing (presbycusis), or ototoxic medications. It commonly co-occurs with hearing loss. Contributing factors include noise-induced hearing damage, middle ear disease, Ménière's disease, cervical spine dysfunction, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, cardiovascular disease, and psychological distress. Tinnitus severity is strongly modulated by attention, emotional response, and habituation.
