Patterns of Sensory Overload

Sensory overload occurs when the cumulative input from one or more sensory modalities — vision, hearing, touch, smell, taste, vestibular, or proprioceptive — exceeds the individual's ability to process and regulate effectively, producing a state of significant distress or functional disruption. It is a core experience for many autistic individuals, where sensory hypersensitivity means that ordinary environments can become acutely overwhelming. Sensory overload also occurs in fibromyalgia and ME/CFS (where central sensitisation lowers sensory thresholds), PTSD (where hypervigilance amplifies threat-related sensory processing), sensory processing disorder, migraine (particularly during attacks), and in highly sensitive persons (HSP) during high-stimulation periods. The physiological response may include shutdown (withdrawal, dissociation, apparent calm), meltdown (reactive behavioural response — crying, shouting, self-directed behaviour), or 'brown-out' (cumulative depletion over time without acute crisis).
