Short-term memory impairment is common across many conditions: it is a core cognitive complaint in depression (pseudodementia), anxiety (attentional interference with encoding), sleep deprivation, hypothyroidism, vitamin B12 deficiency, perimenopause, medication effects (anticholinergics, benzodiazepines, opioids), and — most significantly — as an early feature of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or Alzheimer's dementia. Distinguishing reversible from progressive causes is the primary clinical task.
